Recent mahi-mahi caught during an early October private fishing charter in Cozumel.

Cozumel fishing in October is all about changing conditions and being flexible.

We are moving away from the main spring and summer billfish season and into fall. Wahoo become more interesting as we move toward winter, but mahi-mahi are still showing up.

A recent charter during the first few days of October produced several nice mahi, including the fish pictured above.

We have not been running as many trips during the slower fall period, but the trips we have run are giving us a good look at what is happening on the water right now.

What Is Cozumel Fishing in October Like Right Now?

October is a transition month.

Recent fishing has included mahi-mahi, bonito and opportunities for wahoo as the seasonal pattern begins to change.

That does not mean every trolling trip will produce steady action.

On a recent charter, our guests caught a bonito but trolling slowed afterward. They decided to spend more of their trip snorkeling instead.

That's one of the biggest advantages of a private charter.

Do what you want.

Fish. Snorkel. Try some bottom fishing. Or stay with whatever is working.

You are not required to do every activity. If the fish are biting and you want to keep fishing, keep fishing. If you want to change things up, we can do that too when conditions and location allow.

Wahoo and Cozumel Fishing in October

Wahoo become an increasingly important target as Cozumel moves into the fall and winter fishing season.

They are fast, powerful fish and one of the most exciting species we troll for around the island.

October is still a transition period, so we would never promise wahoo—or any other fish—on a particular trip.

Fishing depends on currents, bait, water conditions and where the fish happen to be that day.

But if you are visiting later in October and into November, wahoo are definitely a species worth watching.

Mahi-Mahi Are Still Around

Mahi season may be strongest earlier in the year, but the calendar does not suddenly shut the fishing off.

Our recent early-October charter is a good example.

The group landed several mahi-mahi, giving us fresh evidence that these colorful offshore fish are still around Cozumel this fall.

That is one reason we prefer talking about what we are actually seeing on the water instead of promising a particular species based only on a fishing calendar.

Our Cozumel fishing calendar is a useful seasonal guide, but every year and every day can be different.

Cozumel Fishing in October Means Watching the Weather

We have also had some typical October weather.

Rain has been on and off during portions of the past week, and changing wind and sea conditions have resulted in temporary port restrictions and closures.

Conditions around Cozumel can change quickly.

A rainy forecast does not automatically mean your trip is canceled. What matters is the actual marine conditions and whether the harbor authorities allow boats to operate.

If conditions are unsafe and the port is closed, we do not go.

If the port is open and conditions are safe, we work with what the day gives us.

Fishing, Bottom Fishing or Snorkeling

A private charter gives you choices.

Some guests come specifically to troll offshore.

Others want bottom fishing for snapper, grouper and other reef species.

Some want to combine fishing with snorkeling in Cozumel.

And sometimes the plan changes once we are on the water.

That is fine.

If everyone is enjoying the fishing, we can keep fishing. If trolling slows and your group wants to snorkel, we can switch when the charter, conditions and location allow it.

It's your private charter. Do what you want.

How Long Should You Fish in October?

Cozumel Anglers offers private fishing charters in 4-, 6- and 8-hour options.

A four-hour trip works well for guests who want a shorter fishing experience or have limited time.

Six hours gives us more flexibility. It is also a strong choice if you want to combine fishing with snorkeling or another activity.

Eight hours gives serious anglers the most fishing time and more opportunity to adjust the plan during the day.

There is no single right answer. Choose the amount of time that works for your group.

Cozumel Fishing in October for Cruise Passengers

October also brings cruise passengers sailing into Cozumel from Gulf Coast ports such as Galveston, New Orleans and Mobile.

If you are visiting by cruise ship, send us the ship name, arrival time and departure time when you inquire.

Also pay attention to ship time versus Cozumel local time, especially as we move later into fall and U.S. clocks change.

We schedule cruise passengers conservatively so there is time to get off the ship, reach the boat and return before all-aboard.

You can read more in our Cozumel fishing charters for cruise passengers guide.
